The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra present Elgar’s Cello Concerto – Friday June 9

Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture
Elgar Cello Concerto
Dvořák Symphony No.8

Rory MacDonald Conductor
Guy Johnston Cello

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra makes a much-anticipated return to the De La WarrPavillion for a concert of beautiful classics. The evening opens with Mendelssohn’s magical Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The fairies and enchanted woodlands of Shakespeare’s play captivated Mendelssohn from an early age, inspiring him to write accompanying music. From the opening notes of the overture he perfectly captured the mood of bickering lovers, shimmering sprites and magical forests.

Guy Johnston will then perform Elgar’s famous and deeply heartfelt 1919 Cello Concerto. Partly a lament for the First World War, and written in the autumn of his life, it yearns for a simpler, untainted past.

Completing the programme, Rory MacDonald conducts Dvořák’s Symphony No.8. Infused with Dvořák’s Czech heritage, this Romantic symphony combines soaring string themes, roaring brass, atmospheric percussion and dancing woodwind.

Lessons are suspended and they have two weeks left to have some fun and say goodbye to their friends. It’s a disaster for Daphne. All she wants is to be kissed before she’s seventeen, but now she’s got to move away, she may never see Gerald again! The girls decide to make one last raid on the old witch Miss Popplewell’s strawberry patch. But an intruder gets in first. Who is he? Is it the gypsies, a burglar, a foreign agent, even an escaped convict? The entire village goes into a panic. But they’re British! They must stick together.

In the meantime, will the girls get the strawberries? Will their kindly headmistress, Miss Tricklebank, confine them to their dorms? Will Daphne be kissed before she’s seventeen? Richard Durrant: Music for Midsummer – Wednesday June 28

In his celebration of midsummer this maverick virtuoso and natural storyteller performs his own guitar originals, choice moments from the acoustic/classical repertoire and Bach on the ukulele.  This wonderful music can be heard in venues the length of the British Isles played by an extraordinary musician carrying his entire show on a bicycle.

Guitar virtuoso and composer Richard Durrant studied at the Royal College of Music, but his unexpected musical choices and the sheer emotional depth of his playing set him apart. Connection with the land is central to Richard’s work including his last three acclaimed albums Stringhenge, Rewilding and The Sleep of a King. His tours and album releases are planned around the Solstices and Equinoxes.

Durrant’s bicycle stands next to him onstage at each concert, its lights illuminating his performance.  His idea of “Cycling Music” was motivated by the effect on the environment of an average 35,000 carbon heavy miles playing concerts in the years leading up to his first Cycling Music tour in 2014.

Durrant says: “These concerts are not just about the fragile beauty of these instruments, they might also remind people how remarkable a bicycle is. Bicycles save money and promote good health but most importantly they help protect the natural environment. We must all acknowledge that there is a climate crisis.” *
