The Bexhill Sinfonietta – Sunday 5 June

Following the success of our inaugural concert in October 2021 we are
delighted to be chosen to perform the opening concert of the Bexhill
Festival of Music.

The Bexhill Sinfonietta returns to the Izzard Theatre with an exciting
programme of music .

Sussex has always been a favourite place for writers, artists and musicians to
take up residence; some of the pieces in the concert are by composers who
have lived here and others are written about particular places in the county.
The programme will include ‘The Lark Ascending’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams
with our young and talented soloist Jada Marsh taking the solo part. Also
appearing will be ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ by George Butterworth and the
‘Where the Rainbow Ends’ Suite by Roger Quilter. New to the audience will be
the ‘Bexhill Overture’ by Peter Lapham and ‘Ann Garland’ by Kenneth Roberts.
The familiar and delightful piece ‘The Sleepy Lagoon’ will be played in full.
Surprisingly, this was composed by Eric Coates as he looked over the bay
from the beach at Selsey towards Bognor Regis, hovering pinkly in the misty
distance.

“I am delighted to be conducting the Bexhill Sinfonietta once again. The players
are drawn from the best orchestral musicians residing in Sussex and Kent,
many of whom have played with some of the most prestigious ensembles in
the country including the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra,
BBC Radio Orchestra etc. The orchestra also seeks to offer opportunities for
outstanding young musicians to be showcased as soloists and it is proving
a fascinating and rewarding experience for both conductor and established
musicians to work with them. It is my pleasure and privilege also to be able
to programme some of my own music and that of other composers living in
the area as a foil to other much loved and well-known pieces by more familiar
composers.’ Kenneth Roberts
