Thursday 1 June – Symphonic Summer with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

De La Warr Pavilion, Marina, Bexhill-on-Sea TN40 1DP

Rossini – La Scala di Seta Overture

Fauré – Pavane

Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto No.1

Dvorák – Symphony No.8

Conductor – Brian Wright

Piano – Alex Panfilov

For an evening of outstanding classics from your favourite composers, join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Symphonic Summer at the De La Warr Pavilion.

Opening with the light-hearted Overture to Rossini’s La Scala di Seta, internationally acclaimed and Sussex-based conductor Brian Wright leads the Orchestra in this lively opener, which bursts with energy and paves the way for Fauré’s more pensive Pavane. Perhaps the best known of Fauré’s works, its famous winding melody characterises this enchanting miniature, creating a tranquil and magical atmosphere. Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular Piano Concerto No.1 provides the centre-piece for this thrilling concert. A majestic theme soars above crashing chords in the piano, creating a dramatic and triumphant opening, which contrasts with the more lyrical passages that follow. Performed by Alex Panfilov, this fiendish work will showcase the artist’s immense talent, particularly in the show-stopping final movement.

Concluding this gripping programme is Dvorák’s joyous Symphony No.8. Its twists and turns leap from one melody to the next in an exhilarating and theatrical work, which is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Starts: 7.30pm. Tickets £17, £25, £32. Box office: 01424 229111.

Friday 30 June – Richard Durrant – Stringhenge: Acoustic Music Inspired by the British Isles

St Peter’s Church, Church Street, Bexhill-on-Sea TN40 2HE

Richard Durrant’s latest musical adventure will feature the Uffington Tenor Guitar, built in Sussex, and a six string Concert Guitar, built in Lincolnshire and made from 5,000 year old bog oak. This show is a uniquely British exploration of unplugged, acoustic music on the folk/classical cusp.

Stringhenge is as beautifully produced and richly visual as any of Durrant’s tours of recent years. It’s also unplugged allowing you to hear and feel the vibrations of the wood in these incredible guitars. Durrant plays them brilliantly and is a clever weaver of intriguing tales. It’s real roots music linking the mesolithic to the 21st century.

The Durrant originals written for this tour draw inspiration from the hill barrows of Sussex, the flatlands of East Anglia and the mountains of Cumbria. Other pieces are chosen from eleven centuries of music.

Starts: 7.30pm. Tickets £14. Box office: 01424 229111. Book online: www.dlwp.com
